VR Surface to SR Bag

Overview

This document describes the method and procedures developed by Hydrographic Systems and Technology Branch (HSTB) for converting Variable Resolution (VR) surfaces into 5-meter (5m) Single Resolution (SR) Bathymetric Attributed Grids (BAG). Marine Chart Division (MCD) will use the 5m SR BAG to chart soundings and contours.

This tool was developed from the following requirements:

1. Bag must be Shoal-Biased
2. Bag must provide a 5m Single Resolution Surface
3. Bag must be readable by ESRI products
4. Bag must preserve real data gaps and holidays (no interpolation)
5. Bag must represent topology at largest chart scale (1:5000)

The most efficient method to achieve these requirements is to convert a VR csar to a 5m SR BAG using the “Binned Only Method”.

‘VR Surface to SR Bag’ accomplishes this using the Caris ImportPoints and ExportRaster functions as follows:

Procedure

Run ‘VR Surface to SR Bag’ from the Pydro Explorer menu in Branch Tools.

Use the ‘VR CSAR File’ button to point to a VR CSAR file. Pointing to a valid file will populate the SR BAG Output path with a potential bag file name. Feel free to change this name if you wish.

Click Convert File to start the process. A new Single Resolution CSAR file will be generated in the same directory as the VR Surface. The SR BAG Output file will be generated as specified in the SR BAG Output button.
